The Operational Programme to Support the Most Disadvantaged is an instrument to combat poverty and social exclusion in Portugal.

This program consists of an intervention based on food support and other basic consumer goods, as well as the development of accompanying measures that empower the most needy people at various levels, thus promoting their inclusion.?The Program aims, through its actions, to reduce situations of vulnerability that put the integration of the most fragile people and households at risk, reinforcing the responses of existing public policies.

The project serves 127 beneficiaries monthly and has a time horizon between 2020 and 2022

Problem:

Deficit in active participation in the community of people with moderate intellectual disabilities.

Causes:

• Overprotection of families and teams of entities supporting these populations
• Community maladjustment to disability.

Effects:

• Decreased quality of life;
• Deficit of autonomy;
• Social and economic exclusion;
• Assistentialist image of people with disabilities.

Solution:

• Promote the street sale of cakes, savory snacks and/or peeled fruits produced and distributed with the participation of people with moderate intellectual disabilities, together with companies and public entities in the municipality or in places to be designated;
• Promote the organization of coffee breaks for events (birthday parties, seminars, etc.), with the involvement of people with moderate intellectual disabilities.

Project Objectives:

• Promote the social and professional integration of the immigrant community in the municipality of Tavira, through the participation of the immigrant population in local dynamics and intercultural dialogue;
• Promote reading and writing skills in Portuguese, which contribute to the autonomy of the immigrant community;
• Reduce negative prejudices and stereotypes associated with the immigrant community, among the community at large and among local service professionals to whom immigrants turn;

Planned activities:

• Promotion of sports and/or cultural activities that strengthen social relations with the local community;
• Creation of an educational guide to support families with minors in their care in accessing the educational system in Portugal;
• Creation of videos of traditional recipes from various countries and editing of recipe books;
• Celebration of anniversaries to enable the immigrant community to celebrate various festive dates, whether Portuguese or from the immigrants' various countries of origin;
• Creation of a labor mediation device with the purpose of supporting beneficiaries in the active search for employment, in the recognition and equivalence of school skills, training in digital literacy, health and safety at work, action in emergency situations and labor legislation;
• Promotion of thematic workshops in various areas of interest with the aim of raising awareness among beneficiaries about everyday issues and promoting the acquisition of tools that enable them to achieve greater social and professional inclusion;
• Stimulation of a multidisciplinary working group;
• Multicultural Holidays, with the aim of filling the gap in summer school holidays and promoting the inclusion of immigrant children in recreational and educational activities, in different contexts and realities;
• Promotion of theoretical/practical sessions that promote the acquisition of Portuguese language reading and writing skills;
• “Playing in Portuguese” workshop, with the aim of supporting children and young people in learning the Portuguese language through an informal and playful context;
• Participation in city fairs through demonstration of project information;
• Holding a photographic exhibition in a public access location in the city, alluding to the experiences of the immigrant population in the municipality;
• Creation of a social marketing campaign through videos, billboards and podcasts to promote various topics related to the immigrant population;
• Creation of a Social Responsibility Award in the Sotavento Algarvio;
• Awareness/information actions for professionals who work directly or indirectly in the immigration area.
